Writing a homebrew warscroll
The quickest way to a fair homebrew unit is to start from a unit that already plays the way yours should.
Start from a neighbour
Add the closest existing unit from its faction page, rename it, and change one thing at a time. Its characteristics, weapon profiles and points are the baseline.
Characteristics by role
- Line infantry: Move 5", Health 1 to 2, Save 4+ or 5+, Control 1.
- Elite infantry and foot heroes: Health 4 to 6, Save 3+ or 4+, Control 1 to 2.
- Cavalry: Move 8" to 12", Health 3 to 4, Control 2.
- Monsters: Move 10" and up, Health 12 or more, Control 5, and usually a Battle damaged ability for the last few wounds.
Abilities
One or two abilities, each with a timing the game already uses — Passive, Your Hero Phase, Once Per Battle, or a Reaction. Pick the matching type in the editor and the card colours itself. Reuse the game's own wording so nobody has to learn a new mechanic at the table.
Points
Compare with two or three units of the same role and Health. When in doubt, price it a little high and let it earn a discount after a few games.
